Right now you can become a part of a small percent of Google search users on Google.com who will be able to see a +1 button next to search listings. Almost a year after Facebook introduced their Like button, Google introduces its own rival, the +1 (pronounced "Plus One") button, Google's own social bookmarking on a very large scale. Why is this important for you as a consumer?
Here is what Matt Cutts, a Google engineer who is most known for leading Google's search spam fighting team, says about it: "The primary benefit is that search gets better. It gets better in the user interface immediately, and we'll look at it as a potential signal to improve search quality as well. I find social search extremely useful, especially with the recent updates. This change continues the evolution of social search, and it's a natural progression to improve the search experience."
If you would like to be a part of the testing group you can visit Google Experimental, where you can select an option for "+1" to appear in your searches (by the way you need to be logged in your Google Profile in order to do it.) From your profile page, you'll need to opt-in to +1. Now you will see "+1" on a right side of each search result and you can click on it if you like it. When you do that "+1′d", as Google says it, will be shown to your social network. As of right now this means all the people in your Gmail & Google Talk chat list, people in your "My Contacts" group in Google Contacts and people you follow in Google Reader or Google Buzz. With +1, they will see your "likes" on search results pages and on your Google Profile.
Aside from Google's search listings, you can "+1" ads from Google AdWords that show up in search results. According to Google all ads will be getting these buttons, there will be no way for advertisers to turn them off, clicks on the "+1 button" will not count as a paid ad click and advertisers will be able to see stats about which ads are getting the most +1s.
What if you are not an advertiser with Google? Google says that "soon after launch," anyone registered with it will be able to see +1 stats for their non-paid or "organic" search listings.
As of right now Google search and Google ads are only places to see "+1" buttons. But "coming soon" (probably months rather than weeks), publishers will be able to put these buttons on their web pages, along with Facebook's Like buttons and Twitter's Tweet buttons.
I guess, as a user, we will have to be educated more about it because there are many buttons users can click on any given site and unless they know where their recommendations go, chances are they won't bother using this feature much.
On the other hand, as a publisher, we'll have to adjust our internet marketing strategies once more.
I doubt that there is a lot of traffic to anybody's Google Profile today, so why would I feel inclined to add more content to it? Because I have a sneeky feeling it is going to become mighty relevant pretty soon here.
